10 ways to minimize Student Loans

1.  Look for Tuition Deals - it is a competitive market place, shop for your education.

There is more and more pressure on financial institutions to be more reasonable, shop hard, there's tuition deals to be found.

2.  Prepare for Changes in how Federal Aid will be given out.

There is a wealth of changes to the federal aid programs, everything from recognizing same sex parents  when assessing student need, to evaluating both parents financials, even if divorced.  

Many of the changes may make aid harder, not easier, be informed.

3.  Keep the Grades Up

he National Center for Education Statistics reports that the proportion of undergraduates receiving merit-based aid more than doubled from 1996 to 2008 and the average merit award rose from $4,000 to $4,700.  Want to ditch class, but plan on attending college.   Take the preasure off yourself financially for years to come, stay in class, those grades will lower your college costs.

$9.84 Credit Card Scam

We usually see a decline in the number of credit card scams once the Holliday Season is over.  Not this year.

Here's another report about a credit card scam.

Check your bank statements for transactions for $9.84, typically listed as customer support.

The amount is small enough that most never notice it.  You might have just fallen victim of a scam.

If this happens to you, call your credit card provider right away, get a new card and cancel this one, and ask for a fraud alert on your file.

You might be lied to, but when collecting a debt... you have to be sure to always be on the right side of the equation, and always honest.

In their bulletin "Representation Regarding Effect of Debt Payments on Credit Reports and Scores"  The CFPB lays out guidelines for creditors debt buyer and third=party collectors about what you should and should not be saying to debtors while collecting on a debt.

These guidelines are largely focussed on the impact of the debt on the debtors credit score.   Specifically these are the areas under discussion in the bulletin:

• Paying debts in collection and improvements in a consumer’s credit report• Paying debts in collection and improvements in a consumer’s credit score• Paying debts in collection and improvements in a consumer’s creditworthiness• Paying debts in collection and the increased likelihood of a consumer receiving credit or more favorable credit terms from a lender

Based on its supervision, enforcement, and other activities, the CFPB is aware these

types of representations are being made and is concerned some may be deceptive under the FDCPA, the Dodd-Frank Act, or both.

Look for Complaints, Welcome Them.

Huh?  How counter-intuitive is that??

Well, consumer complaints are an almost inevitable part of the debt collection industry in Florida.

The question is would you rather that those complaints come to you, or would you rather handle the debtor dispute in-house, BEFORE it gets to the CFPB, or the Better Business Bureau, or worse the state attorney general?

Your door should be open to hearing debtor complaints, and your team should be active in acting on them.

Take care of consumer complaints before they damage your reputation, before you open yourself to law suits.  Since consumer complaints are an inevitable part of our industry, be sure you are well equipped to not just deal with them, but to draw them into your organization before they escalate.
